    Hi!
I’m new to WP and I heard about the Ultimate Ping list over at another site.

The instructions on that site weren’t very clear (esp. for a newbie!) Did some searching and luckily came across your site!

I followed all of the steps you outlined. When I went to WP and added your five url’s to ping, I then Updated options and then other urls (22 altogether) came up in the place of the five. I re-did those steps with same result.

Did I miss something or is that the way it should be?

    Thanks!

PS – BTW, Great job! I appreciate your thorough instructions and screenshots!

Very easy to install, I’m about to use it. Thank you!

  3. admin Says:

Len: Have a look at the information in the file ‘update-services.txt’ included in the download zip file. This gives you clear instructions as to what services to ping.

    Thomas: Thank you!

    Hello.
I’m having this problem with your plugin:

02/11/08 08:06:29 Forced pinging services (Homepage)
02/11/08 08:06:29 ► http: //rpc.pingomatic.com/ could not be pinged. Error message: “transport error – could not open socket: 0 Success”

This occurs with all the URLs in the box.
    Could you help me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey,

Great plug-in. I used to use the original, but these modifications are superb, and I’ve upgraded my blogs completely to use your new version. I have noticed one thing that I don’t know is a bug or of it’s the way it is designed to work.

If I have a post that I save as a draft, then come back to it awhile later and publish it, the log file says the the post was only edited, and doesn’t do a ping. Thus, the post never gets pinged. Of course I can do a manual ping, but that results in only simple pings, not extended pings.

Is this the way it is supposed to work, or is there a way to get it to detect when a draft post is published and do extended pings? Thanks in advance!

Not sure if it matters, but I’m using WordPress 2.3.3.

  6. Mike Mada Says:

    Hi there.

Can I just confirm that SUP only pings when a future date post actually gets posted and not when it gets loaded?

    Thanks
    Mike

WOW, what a plugin… I have to say it is by far my favorite plugin for my Greatest Insider Secrets blog. I think many bloggers quickly overlook the power of ping services and also overlook the penalties that could occur if you make EDITS to your posts and repeatedly ping. So smart-update-pinger is truly a bloggers best friend!

  8. Joy Says:

Never easier and I am a novice. Thank you, and I look forward to the softwares feedback.

I installed Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger in WordPress MU and it did not seem to break anything. Hopefully it works with WordPress MU. I don’t know how to check to see if it does work.

  10. Dennis Says:

Love the plugin, easy install with your instructions.

It is running, but I’m getting 3 times as many errors as I get “successfully pinged.”

The majority of the error messages were:

http: //1470.net/api/ping could not be pinged. Error message: “transport error – HTTP status code was not 200”

http: //api.feedster.com/ping could not be pinged. Error message: “transport error – could not open socket: 110 Connection timed out”

http: //api.moreover.com/ping could not be pinged. Error message: “parse error. not well formed”

Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks again for a great plug in!

  11. Bryan Ellis Says:

Has anyone been able to determine if Smart Update Pinger works properly under WordPress MU?

    Thanks!

  12. Tim Says:

On or about line 248 of the UPSU Pinger php program, I added two lines and modified the $logfile string. This requires additional directories in the plugin in directory. Because I am using the “directory” option for WPMU it is a little easier to manage. But the principle is still the same for “subdomain”. Only the parsing needs to be changed to pull off the subdomain from the URL.

    $siteurl = get_bloginfo(‘url’);
    $sitedir = split(‘/’,$siteurl);
    $logfile = ABSPATH . “wp-content/plugins/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger/sites/$sitedir[3]/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger.log”;

All log files must be writeable and must have the same logfile name in each directory
    ../sites/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger.log {THE MAIN WPMU site}
    ../sites/health/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger.log
    ../sites/money/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger.log

Then each log file works for each blog.

For me, then this fine plugin works as it should for WPMU.

  13. Ludmila Ivanova Says:

Hello! Just installed your plugin. For some reason, I cannot get past the “activate” stage on wordpress. Where is the “options” tab you speak so I can list the services to ping?

    7. Click on the Options tab and then on the ‘UP Smart Update Pinger’ tab to setup the plugin

Sorry for the stupidity of the question. total newbie here!

  14. Lea Says:

I installed the Smart Update Pinger, but am not sure if it will work with my WordPress v2.6.5. Will it? How can I test it?
I really hope it will, because this looks like a wonderful plugin!
    Thank you.

  15. Lea Says:

Well, it looks like it’s working! Yaay! I have a log of sites pinged, and when I updated an existing blog, they were not pinged. (At least, that’s what the log says.;-)

    Thank you, thank you!

  16. David Says:

I installed the Smart Update Pinger plugin last night on two of my blogs, and it appears to be working as advertised. :) Thanks!

However, I forgot to CHMOD the log file on my second installation, and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

Is it possible that on my host, this step is not necessary?

    Please advise.

  17. SpeedReader Says:

It is very good that this plugin supports extended ping. But when checking with the log, I found that it pings URL with WordPress default path like “domain.com/?p=275″ instead of my post name path like “domain.com/reading-speed-test”. Is there any way to fix this problem?

  18. Bryan Says:

Thanks for a great plugin. When new posts are pinged via your plugin, is the ping directed to the specific page that has been created, or to the home page of the blog on which the page is located?

I hope this question makes sense ;-)

    Thanks!

  19. admin Says:

Mike: That is 100% correct: the Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger only pings when a future date post actually gets posted on the site (based on a set time), not when it is first published.

Bryan Ellis & Phil: See Tim’s note

Tim: Thank you for giving this advice on WordPress MU customization!

Ludmila: You can simply sign into the WordPress admin area (usually available at yourdomain.com/wp-login.php), then click on the ‘Options’/'Settings’ link and next on the ‘UP Smart Update Pinger’ link. Then continue with the steps as described. For WordPress 2.5+ the ‘Options’ link has been changed to ‘Settings’ :)

Lea: Thank you for your kind words & yes it works fine in all WordPress releases since 2.0

David: Yes, this may be the case. Some hosting services allow the server by default write rights to all files.

SpeedReader: This has been fixed in version 3.1 of the Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger. Please re-download.

Bryan: If the ping service supports ‘extended pinging’, the homepage and the specific page (the newly created page) are send. This is one of the key features of this plugin. See nummer (2) in the screenshots for an example. If the ping service does not support ‘extended pinging’ a regular ping is send with the homepage only.

  20. admin Says:

César: Likely this was a temporary error with pingomatic. I tested pining pingomatic using WordPress 2.8.6 and Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger v3.1 today, and it works fine: ’11/19/09 15:55:58 ► [Extended Ping] http ://rpc.pingomatic.com/ was successfully pinged’. Another reason I can think of (if you are still getting the error) is that you/your web host may have some firewall restriction in place which is blocking the ping.

Dennis: Thank you for kind words! In regards your question: there is a list of recommended services to ping which is included with the plugin. See the file ‘update-services.txt’ included in the zip file that came with the plugin. Many of the long lists of ping services floating around the Internet are not really effective, as they contain many services that don’t work/are disabled etc. Also, some services are hubs that ping more than one service on your behalf (like pingomatic), and so if you have a long list, you may be (unknowingly) pinging the same service twice. There’s a good link with more info in the aforementioned ‘update-services.txt’ file. Enjoy!

Tony: Thank you for the great comments… In regards your question: I’ve just tested your use case using Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger v3.1 with WordPress 2.8.6, and it works correctly – i.e. I created a draft, when out of the edit view/window, went back to edit it again (added some text) and published it. The ping executed normally: ’11/20/09 13:26:25 ► [Extended Ping] http ://rpc.pingomatic.com/ was successfully pinged’. Possibly this particular WordPress version may have handled things differently. Can you upgrade to a more recent version of WordPress and test with the latest version of the plugin? Let me know if you still have issues.

  21. Phil Says:

If after adding a lot of content to a post, is there a way to re-ping that one post without pinging all posts?

  22. Phil Says:

I was just going to post a question and noticed that I had already posted the question last March 27th just before this comment. Again, I would like to ping just one post without re-pinging all of the posts. Is that possible?

  23. Phil Says:

Is it possible to ping custom posts? I have a site at http://www.usmotorcycleclassifieds.com which creates classified ads with custom posts but Ultimate Plug-Ins Smart Update Pinger or probably not your plug-in but wordpress is only pinging regular posts and pages without pinging new classified ads.

  24. Anni Says:

Just wanted to say that I found and installed this plugin twenty minutes ago and I am amazed : it works great !
I was desperate after trying hard to make MBP Ping Optimizer and CBnet Ping Optimizer to work, now I am happy and want to say a BIG THANKS to plugin’s creator(s) :-)
